How Does Indoor Go-Karting Tracking Work?

Each go-kart is equipped with a tag that transmits a signal to anchors attached to the ceilings. The anchors then send the signal to the RTLS server and calculate the vehicle’s position in real-time. The tag is powered by the vehicle’s battery. Learn more about how UWB RTLS works.

A Birds-Eye-View to Boost the Engagement of the Racers and the Audience

Using the real-time location system, the actual position of all racers and their movement can be followed via a birds-eye-view. This view is projected on the screens placed in the cafeteria and above the track so both the audience and the racers can see the race’s progress, everyone’s position and how much time they are losing on the leader, making the race even more engaging.

Increased Safety by Speed Control and a Slow-Down System

The safety of the track can be increased and the damage to the vehicles and track and injuries of both clients and staff can be limited by speed control and a slow-down feature. The slow down can be set for a particular part of the track prone to accidents.

When the kart enters the designated “slow down” area, it is automatically slowed down to a pre-defined speed until it leaves the area. This can also be set manually at any given time, for example, in cases when a beginner racer is competing on the track.

Crash Detection and Its Real-Time Location

As the tracking tag attached to the kart includes an accelerometer sensor, it can report a crash and its position in real-time. An alert is sent and warning lights illuminated along the track leading to the crash’s location.

At the same time, information is also shown on the screen above the track, in front of the audience, and, most importantly, to the track marshals, who can see the exact location of the crash and how many racers are affected, allowing them to take appropriate action and reach the spot of the accident faster.

While you might think that taking the wrong direction only happens on highways during limited visibility, a perfectly visible track for go karts also experiences this. Especially after collision situations, drivers tend to follow the quickest way out, driving in the opposite direction, thus increasing the chances of a head-on collision.

The system automatically detects movement in the opposite direction and sends an alert to screens along the track and to marshals’ devices, also providing the wrong-direction driver’s location, so marshals can intervene.

One way to increase a racer’s skills is to learn and mimic the winner by replaying their movement throughout the track and race. The system allows users to replay the exact trajectory of the winner so their path, speed and way how they drive into curves can be learned from.
